High Kites are a psych-rock supergroup from Hamilton. Born out of a mutual love of psych, High Kites unites an outfit of rag-tag musicians (including members of Cowlick, Twin Within, Grey Lands and Bruce Peninsula). If you strong male vocals, catchy guitar riffs, and a good time, you will love High Kites. High Kites member and general man-about-town Dylan Hudecki answered our Q&A on behalf of the band.
Q – We are really excited to have you play Supercrawl this year. What is the first thing that pops into your mind when you hear the word “HAMILTON”?
Potential. Family. Inspiration. Small pond.
Q – Who are you looking forward to seeing at Supercrawl? (bands, artists, etc)
Caribou/Jessy Lanza was cool. Rich Aucoin, Hayden, Twin Within (featuring our very own Steve McKay:), Spruce Invaders, too many buds to mention.
Q – How would you compare playing a regular show to playing at a festival?
Festivals are fun because you invariably play for a ton of people that don’t know you or your music. So it’s fresh ears and new potential fans. Plus laminates are sooo in these days, so…
Q – If you could put on your music festival what would be on your ‘must have’ list? (Alternately: If you have been involved in putting together your own festival – what did you have that you were proud of?)
I wanted to put a fest a few years ago, but as I got further into making it a reality, one detail after the other, after the other, after the other came up. WAY too complex and grandiose for me. I respect the fest throwers of the World. You need a team to pull it off properly. LOTS of planning needs to happen. I’d like to curate a fest one day. That’d be cool beans. Especially if it was all the bands I love. Problem with that is budget. The bands that’d you and your friends would love to see are sometimes expensive, and rightly so.
Q – If you could do a band/musician swap with another band/musician for a day and get to play their music at a live show – who would that be?
Hayden cuz he’s the man. Caribou would be cool too, but that’d be way trickier.
Q – In your opinion – what was the ‘summer jam’ of 2015?
“I can’t feel my face.” By the Weeknd. Little known fact about the track is that Michael Jackson came back from the dead, wrote it and recorded it, and then reburied himself.
Q – What’s the best thing you did all summer?
Rented cottages for a few weeks and straight chilled on the beach. Waves are magic. No two are the same. Very good for the soul.
Q – Where do you draw your musical inspiration from?
Absolutely everywhere and from everything. All across the Universe. Sounds cheesy, but it’s true…for me at least.
Q – What is the last thing that crosses your mind before you get on stage?
Put your keys and phone and wallet in your back pocket so you don’t look like a tool.
Q – What are you listening to lately? Can you recommend a track for us to check out?
Mount Eerie is so damn good. Restrained, odd, unique, complex, melancholy. I love his stuff. Though some of it’s hit or miss, but you can just hit skip for those. Listen to “Yawning Sky” if you wanna hear what I mean.
Q – What do you have planned for the fall / winter, musically speaking?
High Kites ep. “LAZY RIVER” comes out Oct. 23/15. We are playing with the Zolas at the Casbah. Come snag a cd or a download card peoples!
