The Dirty Nil are easily the most exciting band in Hamilton, right now. The music is awesome, the guys are friendly and hilarious, and their fans love them. Like, really love them.
Out of all of the musicians we’ve interviewed here, at Cut From Steel, the Dirty Nil interview we did a few months ago is the most read. It holds on to the #1 spot, month after month.
Check them out at Supercrawl on the Dr. Disc stage, Friday, at 11:00pm
Q – We are really excited to have you play Supercrawl this year. What is the first thing that pops into your mind when you hear the word “HAMILTON”?
Dave: Rascal scooters.
Kyle: The bay front.
Q – Where are you most likely to be spotted at a music festival? (gallery, food trucks, beer tent, on some plush grass, in a café, music venue, by a stage, side walk, back alley, etc etc)
Dave: Gorilla cheese.
Kyle: Drinking and watching the bands.
Q – What is the best thing your parents listened to when you were growing up?
Dave: Nothing. Constant ‘Women & Songs’. I’ve repressed most of my childhood.
Kyle: Black Sabbath for being awesome and the Tubes for being weird.
Q – What’s your favourite rap song?
Dave: Slayer – Raining Blood. Rick Rubin’s finest hip-hop production of all time.
Kyle: Probably 7th Chamber: Part 2 by Wu-Tang Clan ,but my JAM right now is The Art of Peer Pressure by Kendrick Lamar.
Q – Do you ever listen to a song and think, ‘Damn, that’s perfection. I wish I could have worked on that’? What is that song?
Dave: Buzzcocks – Why Can’t I Touch It?
Kyle: I would just be Led Zeppelin all the time forever. Whole Lotta Love, House of the Holy, The Song Remains the Same, you name it. I wish I was there. Don’t you?
Q – What is the most inspiring, or most memorable, show you’ve ever attended?
Dave: My Morning Jacket.
Kyle: I’d say there are two. One was the first time I saw the Constantines on Canada Day. That was the first time I ever saw them and you best believe they were the fucking best. The second was seeing the Replacements play Riot Fest this year. You couldn’t have asked for anything better than that show. It was perfect.
Q – What’s your idea of the perfect day off?
Dave: A double feature of Con Air and Face/Off. Eating a bacon cheeseburger. Then petting a bunch of dogs.
Kyle: Are we playing the dating game right now?
Q – What inspires you to make music?
Dave: Shark week.
Kyle: Hanging out with my friends and drinking beer.
Q – What is the last thing that crosses your mind before you get on stage?
Dave: “I should’ve peed again”
Kyle: “Did I leave the oven on?”
Q – What are you listening to a lot this week? Can you recommend a track for us to check out?
Dave: The Jesus Lizard. Boilermaker, the first track on the 1992 album, Liar.
Kyle: Just Diarrhea Planet day in and day out. You have to get past the name because it is so worth it. Check out the track Steve Fauser off their album Loose Jewels. Also Death Grips, always, check out the track ” Bitch Please”
Q – What’s the best thing you did all summer?
Dave: I never got pink-eye. Not even once.
Kyle: Saw The Replacements. Does it get much better than that?
Q – What do you hope to be doing a year from now?
Dave: The same thing. But with a variety of exotic pets.
Kyle: More shows. Lots and lots more shows.
